Becoming a dentist in Australia can be a rewarding journey, but it involves a series of steps and prerequisites to ensure that your qualifications meet Australian standards. In this blog, we’ll walk you through the process of becoming a dentist in Australia, including the ADC Exam, and the duration of the process.
If you are already a dentist in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the Republic of Ireland, you only need to complete the Skills Assessment with the ADC to meet the qualification requirements. For further details, please skip to step 3.
1. The Australian Dental Council (ADC) and Accreditation
The Australian Dental Council (ADC) plays a crucial role in accrediting foreign-trained dentists, working in conjunction with the Dental Board of Australia (DBA) under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS). Their collaboration ensures that international dentists meet the rigorous standards set by Australia.
2. The Three Steps to Becoming a Dentist in Australia
The journey to becoming a dentist in Australia for internationally-trained professionals typically comprises three key stages:
a. Initial Assessment
Before delving into the more demanding phases of the process, your journey begins with the Initial Assessment. Begin by gathering all your academic and professional credentials. You’ll need to provide comprehensive documentation of your dental qualifications, including your dental degree, transcripts, and certificates. These documents will be required for the Initial Assessment, and you may need to have them officially translated and certified if they are not in English. This pivotal step is aimed at evaluating the equivalence of your qualifications to the Australian standards. It’s an essential foundation that ensures your readiness for the subsequent stages.
The application fee for the Initial Assessment is $628 AUD, which is a reasonable investment in your career transition to Australian dentistry. The Initial Assessment takes approximately 4 months to get approved, and once approved, it remains valid for 7 years.
b. ADC Part 1 – Written Examination
The Written Examination represents the second stage of your journey toward becoming a dentist in Australia. This phase is a comprehensive evaluation of your knowledge and comprehension of dental practice. The examination not only tests your theoretical understanding but also assesses your ability to apply this knowledge in real-world scenarios.
The application fee for this examination is $2,060 AUD. In 2022, the passing rate was 24%, making it a challenging but attainable milestone.
Candidates have unlimited attempts to complete the Written Examination within a period of 7 years following the completion of the Initial Assessment. Furthermore, this examination is held twice a year.
The ADC Written examination is held in multiple locations, Here are the Countries:

providing candidates with options to do the first exam before even stepping foot into Australia, This allows Candidates to decide if they want to commit to the journey after passing the Written Exam.
c. ADC Part 2 – Practical Examination
The Practical Examination is the concluding challenge on your path to securing your place as a dentist in Australia. This stage is designed to assess your clinical skills and your capacity to deliver effective dental care. It’s a rigorous examination that demands precision and proficiency. While it is a significant undertaking, the investment in your career is evident, as successful candidates find their place in the Australian dental landscape.
The application fee for the Practical Examination is $4,635 AUD. In 2022, the passing rate was 27%, indicating the high standards upheld in the assessment. Candidates have unlimited attempts to complete the Practical Examination within a period of 3 years following the completion of the Written Examination.
To facilitate accessibility and opportunity, the Practical Examination is conducted only in Melbourne three times a year, offering candidates ample chances to demonstrate their clinical expertise and readiness to contribute to Australian dental care.
